In the stifling confines of a teeming New York City subway car, a fatal confrontation recently erupted that sent shockwaves throughout the nation/world. Jordan Neely, a former NYC Michael Jackson impersonator struggling with homelessness and well-documented mental health challenges, was ensnared in a lethal chokehold by Daniel Penny, a U.S. Marine veteran who perceived Jordan as a threat to public safety. Chillingly captured on bystander video, the terrifying scene unfolded with Jordan’s desperate gasps for breath and the unflinching determination of Daniel’s resolve. This incredibly tragic incident has ignited an ongoing, volatile public debate over the deeper societal issues it has illuminated:  systemic racism, vigilante justice, mental health crises, and civilian reactions in moments fraught with perceived danger.
