On December 4, 2024, 26-year-old Luigi Mangione is reported to have gunned down 50-year-old Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, on a NYC street using a 3D printed ghost gun. Since then, the public’s reaction has been sharply divided, oscillating between condemnation and sympathy. The controversy surrounding the crime at the center of today’s case has struck a raw nerve in the national psyche and is as profound as it is polarizing. Luigi has, perhaps inadvertently, become the face of a movement – a symbol of the struggle for an American healthcare system that values human well-being over profit margins. And in many circles, the focus has shifted away from the cold-blooded crime itself to the conditions that may have driven him to commit it.
